Java and Bedrock; one coordinate record does not replace a safe route · 3 min read

Minecraft coordinates: find your way home using X and Z

Record the base coordinates in X, Y, Z order along with the measurement. To return, first reduce the difference in horizontal X and Z, and check the height at the entrance itself.

Three numbers and four directions

X grows to the east, Z to the south; Y shows height. A negative value does not mean “below the ground”: a minus along X leads to the west, along Z - to the north. Rearranged X and Z can send you to a completely different place.

In Java, the coordinates are viewed on the F3 debug screen, including the desired indicator in versions with custom widgets. In Bedrock, enable "Show coordinates" in world settings; on the server it depends on the allowed functions. Write a label like Дом / Overworld / X 120, Y 65, Z -80.

Count two offsets

Let's say you are worth X=-30, Z=45, and the house is X=120, Z=-80. For X you need to increase the value by 150, that is, go further east. In Z, decrease by 125, that is, to the north. Check periodically: both absolute differences should decrease.

The route may be broken

Don't go straight through the gorge for the sake of a beautiful diagonal. First follow the safe road along one axis, then along the other. A bridge, bank or mountain pass may lengthen the path, but will provide recognizable landmarks. Save the coordinates of forks with short names.

The base's X and Z match, but there is no door? Check Y: the entrance may be at the bottom of the cliff or on another floor. For an underground facility, record both the surface and the room level. Don't dig straight down the matched X/Z.

Complete the numbers with roads and noticeable objects. Map and landmarks.

Keep track of the dimension

The same numbers in the regular world, Nether and the Edge refer to different places. For the regular world and Nether portals, the horizontal ratio 8:1 helps plan the connection, but the finished pair is checked separately: the choice of portal depends on the surrounding transitions. Height is not divided by eight like X/Z.

Before going, take a photo of the coordinates and save the recording outside of the game chat. After death, hints from different servers may differ; home recording must remain accessible.

Frequently asked questions

Is minus X the height?

No. Height - Y; X represents east and west.

Why is there a rock at the coordinates of the house?

Check the measurement, X/Y/Z order and entry height.

Is it possible to divide all the portal numbers by eight?

To schedule Nether/regular world pairs, scale X and Z; Y is checked separately.
